"Wood Spirits"

Many different cultures throughout history have believed that "Spirits" inhabit the trees of the forest.  Some believed that Spirits were living within the tree from its beginning, others believed the spirits of passed ancestors returned to the earth and existed in one of its many forms.   Carvers are believed to see, therefore, able to "bring the Spirit out" of the tree.

Wood Spirits are carved into natural pieces of wood as well as mill processed wood.  Sassafras is used much of the time as it is native to the area as well as a good carving wood.  Sassafras also holds its bark creating a beautiful natural contrast of texture and color.  Other wood species are used when available or inspiring.  Natural pieces are collected and air dried.

The carvings are created not only for the art, many pieces are created to be utilitarian as well.  Such uses include wall hooks, match holders, candle holders, pen/pencil or dried flower holders, lamps and bird houses.   Wood Spirits are also carved into functional walking sticks and canes.  Many of the pieces have "natural defects" or limbs to be developed or used, others are drilled to provide the necessary alterations.  Each creation is an original piece, hand carved with traditional hand tools.
